When using the Microsoft Product Key Update Tool you receive the following error message:-
The product key could not be updated on your computer.
This may be due to technical difficulties or network connectivity issues
OR
The application has encountered an error while downloading required files from Microsoft.
Please ensure the machine is connected to the Internet and try again. [Error: 0x80004005]
Cause
Two way communication via the internet is blocked on your computer system. This may be due to Internet Proxy, Anti Virus or Anti-Malware software installed on your computer system, or your ISP does not allow this type of service, on their network.
EditResolution
1. Ensure you log onto the computer experiencing the issue with “Administrator” rights.
2. Check if the date and time settings on your computer system are correct to your locale. If the date is not correct you need to set this to the correct date.
3. If you are using a personal firewall program, disable if for now.
Some antivirus programs have rudimentary firewalls built in, and many have settings to block malicious script. If you have an antivirus (virus checker) software installed, you need to disable it for now.
4. Some antimalware programs (Spy Sweeper, Spy Bot, Ad Aware, Spyware Doctor, etc) have settings to block malicious scripts. Disable your antimalware software, if you have one installed.
5. Run Microsoft Windows Product Key Update Tool.
6. No matter what the result you get by running Microsoft Windows Product Key Update Tool, you need to enable your personal firewall program, antivirus program, and antimalware program, to maintain the security of your computer system.
EditI did all the above, and the Update Tool still gives me this error, now what?
Contact your ISP (Internet Service Provider), as you may have a proxy server install, or the ISP is doing something with your internet connect further upstream that is blocking you from having a two way connection with Microsoft's servers.
EditFine, Did contact the ISP, They claim they are not doing anything to the connection
Take it to a friend's place, who has a different ISP then you, connect your computer to their internet connection, and try running the Windows Product Key Update Tool.
Wow, it did work, this time, now you know you should be changing ISPs. The one you are currently using is well....I dont want to use those words here.
